Each account is a full account — each parent connects their own inbox and keeps their own calendar, and both inboxes are scanned independently, so a school email is picked up whichever parent it was sent to. Events are shared between the accounts by choice, per event or per sender, not automatically. The Family plan is two adult accounts; children are not separate accounts, and the subscription is not shared through Apple Family Sharing.
